What do Batman and Robin, peanut butter and jelly and a dress with a jean jacket have in common? They are some of our favorite dynamic duos. Pairing a dress with a jean jacket is a timeless combo that you can wear across the seasons. The best part? You probably already have these staples tucked away in your closet. Ready to give this iconic fashion duo a go? Here are our favorite ways to wear a dress and a denim jacket

Magical Mates: Why You Should Pair This Jacket With A Dress

Did you know the denim jacket was invented 10 years after Levi Strauss designed the first pair of riveted jeans? It’s true. Developed circa 1880, the jean jacket was an ideal choice of outerwear for manual laborers. The thick denim fabric provided workers with necessary protection. As the popularity of jeans grew, so did the love for all things denim—including dress and jean jacket pairings. The rest? Well, it’s fashion history.

Wearing a dress with a jean jacket is a no-brainer, and we could go on and on why this is the case. This tried-and-true layering option continues to stand the test of time. You’ll look effortlessly current when you toss a jean jacket over your favorite dress. Want to downplay a dressed up ensemble? Need to take your loungewear or athleisure wear from sofa to street? Just add a denim jacket and presto––instant cool factor.

A denim jacket pairs well with virtually any type of dress—from fitted to a-line to stylish maxi dresses. No matter your daring dress pick, layering on a denim jacket is a smart and understated choice. We love the easy texture this style brings to your dress and jean jacket pairing. You can’t go wrong with this perennial partnership.

A Maxi Dress and Jean Jacket: An Everlasting Love Story

Looking to create an instant outfit? Look no further than a maxi dress. Truly the go-to for any frame, a maxi dress is comfortable, classic and oh, so easy to wear. Getting ready for a day date? Maximize your style by wearing a maxi dress with a jean jacket. The truth is, maxi dresses are a lot of material, so don’t let them drown you out. Reach for a maxi dress with a cinched waist or add a belt to flatter your frame. Pair it with a denim jacket with a fitted silhouette to balance out the fullness of a ruffled maxi dress. Add braided slide sandals and you’ve got a pairing that’s made for the books.

Stylist Tip: Positively petite sized gals can rock a maxi dress and jean jacket with the best of them. Stepping on your hems? Knot the bottom of your dress for a carefree vibe. Cuff the sleeves on your denim jacket to complement the effortless knot at the bottom of your dress. Reach new heights with block heels, and don’t forget a cute clutch to tuck away a women’s mask

Wear A White Dress And Jean Jacket To Soak Up The Sunshine

Get a little sunshine and a dose of vitamin D in a white dress with a jean jacket. Did you know that the notion of wearing white in the summertime dates back to the late 1800s? Industrialized cities like New York were notoriously dirty since they lacked modern day sanitation practices. Residents commonly wore darker clothing to conceal dirt. The socially elite escaped the city for country living in the summer months. They left behind their dark garb and packed light, bright and white clothes. Fast forward to today, and we’ve happily left the elitist connotation in the rearview mirror. Now, wearing white in the summertime simply means we’re trying our best to stay cool and dry when the mercury rises.

A stunning white dress and jean jacket unite for the ultimate modern, go-to outfit for summer. Reach for a breezy, tiered white dress and add a pop of subtle color with a denim jacket. Keep the color palette of your look light and airy for an intentionally polished result. Spring 2021 fashion trend colors in earthy and pastel tones will run into the summer months. Try a jacket in blush pink or soft yellow shade to give your blue version a well-deserved break. Complement your color pop with beaded earrings for a look that is sure to heat things up.

Get Spicy in a Red Dress and Jean Jacket

Feeling fiery, passionate or intense? Red is the color for you. This eye-catching hue is the color of extremes, so make a statement in a blazing red dress and jean jacket fusion. Take it up a notch and try your hand at mixing patterns and prints. Dominate your style by pairing a floral pattern dress with strappy heels that offer a peek of snakeskin print. For that last adventurous touch, wear your crimson dress with a distressed jacket in a dark gray or black color. Talk about a peppery dress with jean jacket ensemble.

Stylist Tip: Not sure what is the ideal length for a denim jacket? When wearing a dress with a jean jacket, the shorter the better. A cropped jean jacket accentuates your waistline and elongates your legs. Going for a relaxed feel? A hip length or oversized denim jacket does just the trick.

Wear a Pink Dress and Jean Jacket To Show Off Your Softer Side

Loving the cottagecore trend? We sure are. Roll up the sleeves on your jacket, slip on a nap dress and break out the sourdough starter. A cotton pink dress and jean jacket is an idyllic look for an afternoon of baking. Handcrafted details are a cornerstone of the cottagecore trend, so pair your dress with a jean jacket featuring ruffled hems or embroidered details. Don’t have an embroidered jacket? Hone in on your DIY skill by learning how to embroider a few flowers or your initials into your jacket. Heading outside to sip tea in a field of wildflowers? Don’t forget a pair of wooden wedges to complement your dress and jean jacket

Take An Athleisure-Inspired Black Dress and Jean Jacket for a Spin

If anything, 2020 taught us that comfort and style are synonymous. The athleisure trend blends gym wear and everyday casual attire with ease. Go from lounging around to walking the mall in an athleisure-inspired black dress and jean jacket. The universal styling ability of a denim jacket plays up the casual vibe of a black knit dress. Bonus points are given for wearing an oversized jean jacket and comfy court sneakers. Trust us, you’ll want to wear this sporty set all day long. Take the stage. Wearing a dress with a jean jacket earns you the gold medal.

Stylist Tip: The uber-casual nature of athleisure wear gives you wiggle room to be daring with your denim jacket choices. 70s fashion trends and prints like tie-dye are making a serious comeback. Seek out a dress and jean jacket combo featuring this retro print. As a rule of thumb, your boldest print takes center stage. Layer a tie-dye denim jacket over a solid dress and dust off a pair of throwback Tevas. They are one of the fashion stars of summer 2021.

Ready to dive into a denim jacket this season? Take your style quiz and ask your stylist to send a stunning dress and jean jacket combo in your first Fix. Shipping and returns are always free. Treat yourself, tear into the tissue and slide into each style while trying them on in the comfort of your own home.

Figuring out what to wear with a jean jacket can unlock a whole new level of style success. A denim jacket is a must-have in every woman’s casual wardrobe. There are a number of ways to wear a jean jacket and an endless rainbow of colors they come in. Who could resist? We pinky promise, this is one style staple you don’t want to sleep on. Keep reading our guide on how to wear a jean jacket.

Are Jean Jackets Still in Style?

Before we get into what to wear with a jean jacket, have confidence knowing they’re still in style and trend-savvy for women. If you weren’t sure before, it’s okay, we know where the fashion doubts come from. You were scrolling through your phone and saw trends coming and going faster than you can say Tik Tok. One minute, skinny jeans are out and the next, middle parts are in. But even in the fast-paced world of fashion, certain pieces never go out of style. Case in point: a classic little black dress or a tried-and-true white tee. A denim jacket might get a refresh every now and again. But don’t worry, this closet ride or die is here to stay.

The Jean Jacket Color Wheel

When wondering what to wear with a jean jacket to create the perfect women’s outfit, consider your color options. Your first instinct might be a blue jean jacket, but swapping in a black wash will offer a moody aesthetic. To liven up your looks, expand your closet’s shade range with vivid hues like playful pinks and mellow mints. Maybe your trendsetter heart won’t settle for anything less than jumping on the tie-dye train. Don’t worry, we’ve thought of it all below.

What to Wear with a Blue Jean Jacket

If you’re stumped on what to wear with a blue jean jacket, ask yourself: what would you wear with blue jeans? A graphic tee? A peplum blouse for your first day back at the office? A figure-hugging bodysuit for frozen lemonade with friends on a shaded patio? Yes, yes and absolutely yes. Just like denim bottoms, a denim jacket adds structure and a casual-cool finish to any outfit.

If you’re looking for a way to switch up what to wear with a jean jacket, reach for one with distressed detailing. Are you one of the brave souls embracing the return of low-rise jeans? Go full force 2000’s fashion and pair your low-riders and baby tee with a cropped jean jacket. Now it’s time to pull out those retro butterfly clips you’ve been stashing since 2003.

What to Wear with a Black Jean Jacket

Let’s go to the dark side and talk about what to wear with a black jean jacket. If your instinct was to go classic with the blue jean jacket, let the black jean jacket be your edgy fashion friend. A dress with a jean jacket is a style match made in heaven. Add a twist of savory to a sweet sundress with an oversized denim jacket. The slouchy silhouette will balance out the more tailored fit of your dress.

If you prefer lighter colors for the spring and summer, make a black denim jacket your fall and winter go-to. Better yet, indulge in a black denim jacket in a trucker style with a snuggly sherpa lining. Layer the jacket over a cozy flannel button-down and finish off the look with ankle boots for a bonfire in the woods. An all-black ensemble is sleek and sophisticated. For your next night out, wear a mock knit top with matching moto leggings. Toss on your black denim jacket and slip into strappy black heels and a chunky gold chain necklace for the finishing touch. In women’s fashion, there’s no shortage of what to wear with a jean jacket.

What to Wear with a Colored Jean Jacket

So far, you might be thinking a denim jacket is a supporting actor in your style story. Lights, camera, action—add a little color, and it quickly takes center stage. Entering the vibrant world of color makes finding what to wear with a jean jacket a snap. Women’s summer 2021 fashion trends are filled with soft pastel hues. Pop a blush denim jacket over a striped romper for a picnic in the park. Or, layer a lovely lavender jean jacket on top of a tie-front T-shirt and shorts. Grab your sunhat while you unwind with a podcast and a pint on your front porch.

Looking for a middle ground between a statement color denim jacket and the classic black and blue options? Try a neutral denim jacket in a casual cream, an oaky olive or brooding brown. Make office style your own with a long-line white denim jacket over a pair of paper-bag pants and a satin cami. They say opposites attract—a blue blouse will pop underneath a chocolate-colored jacket. When it comes to jean jackets, follow the rainbow, and you just might find a pot of fashion gold.

What Pants to Wear with a Jean Jacket

When you’re over wearing dresses and skirts but still wondering what to wear with a jean jacket, the answer is simple. Pants, pants and did we mention, pants? You’ve discovered all the different colors of denim jackets at your fingertips. Now, it’s time to talk about what pants to wear with a jean jacket. The short answer: any and all. Since denim jackets come in so many colors and styles, chances are there’s a jacket with your name on it. Below we’ve put together a handful of our favorite pants and jean jacket combinations. Don’t be surprised if they become your favorites too.

Wide-Leg Pants

Hey, Alexa, play Fleetwood Mac because we’re about to take a groovy trip to the world of 70s fashion. The women’s wide-leg pants craze is a #throwbackthursday-approved answer to what to wear with a jean jacket. Contrast the structured denim with the flowy, ethereal silhouette of wide-leg bottoms. Give a nod to the decade’s boho style with an acid wash jean jacket and floral or paisley pants. Extra style points for adding patches or pins to the jacket to make your outfit one-of-a-kind. Denim jackets and dreams go hand in hand.

Blue Jeans

Not sure what to wear with a jean jacket, ladies? Why, more jeans of course. The denim on denim trend is divisive (and has been for decades), but we’re here for it. All it takes is finding your perfect jeans and you’re ready to go. Get your Canadian Tuxedo on with a pair of straight-cut denim in a matching shade of your jacket. Go all-in with a denim or chambray shirt, or create a color blocking technique with a different colored shirt and shoes. If easing into the head-to-toe jean dream is more your style, try combining a dark wash denim jacket with light wash denim jeans. The contrast will break up your outfit and feel closer to your comfort zone.

Athleisure Bottoms

Athleisure looks are always a good idea, and the same goes for what to wear with a jean jacket. A denim jacket can transition your favorite low-key look to street style in no time. Partner biker shorts (one of our favorite summer trends) and a matching sports bra with a true blue jean jacket. Add athletic sneakers if you plan on knocking out a round of cardio. Or say hello to summer relaxation by the water with a sporty pair of strappy sandals. Need an answer to what to wear with your leggings? Throw on an oversized tee and add a pop of color with a trendy yellow jean jacket. If joggers are your MVP, add a breathable tank to the fashion huddle, and your denim jacket is ready to join the team.

How to Wear a Jean Jacket in the Summer

Now that you’ve fallen deeply for denim jackets, you might have one little question left. How to wear a jean jacket in the summer? The first way you can do this is by making the styles underneath your jacket match the season. The mercury in your thermostat is rising fast. Pair your jean jacket with an airy midi-skirt in summer shades of sun-drenched yellow and peachy pink. If you have a loose, laidback nap dress on your hands, you’re right in line with the cottagecore trend. Use a cropped jean jacket to add shape to your waist and emanate summer vibes with rectangle sunglasses at the ready.

On to our second tip—switch it up. Equip your jean jacket for summer by changing how you wear it. This year’s vibe is all about callbacks to past decades—pay homage to the 90s. Watch a Boy Meets World rerun and tie the jacket around your waist in a Topanga-approved style move. Mirror an off-duty model look with an oversized denim jacket that slips off your shoulders in a nonchalant way. For a final fashion take, wear your jacket just over your shoulders when the AC is going strong.

A denim jacket is truly a girl’s best friend. Now that you know what to wear with a jean jacket, are you ready to add one to your wardrobe? Take your style quiz, order a Fix and ask your stylist for a new jean jacket. You can try on your items at home with all of these tips in mind, plus, shipping and returns are always free.

While petite sizing can help alleviate common coat-buying concerns, there are certainly ways to get the most out of these cold-weather essentials. Consider these tips when coat hunting to get the most flattering fit for your petite frame!

What to look for in a coat for petite women:

  1. Waist-defining silhouettes: For petite ladies, anything that belts at the waist gives you a longer silhouette and helps define your figure (if you’re into that). Look for styles that fit close to the body instead of flaring out—these will keep you looking your tallest!
  2. Coats that hit mid-thigh: If you’re 5’3″ and under, a long coat can easily swallow up your petite frame. Coats and jackets that hit, at most, your mid-thigh will be your best bet when keeping you warm without overwhelming your stature.

Here are the best coat styles for petite ladies.

best coats for petite women

Cinched-Waist Parka

If the thermometer is hitting below zero for most winter days and nights, you can’t get through the season without a parka. For petite ladies, look for a parka that has a cinched waist to help break up the heavyweight coat and keep your shape from looking like it’s all coat and no (stylish) body underneath.

Tailored Peacoat

While our taller counterparts can reach for coat styles in just about any length, it’s all about getting the perfect fit when it comes to second layers. Classic styles like a cocoon coat, pea coats and trenches are staples that every woman should have on hand—just make sure that your sleeves hit at an appropriate length so you don’t look like you’re drowning in your father’s, husband’s, or boyfriend’s coat!

Puffer Jacket

Have you heard that Puff Daddy changed his name again? Unlike him though, puffer coats are always a failsafe option for when the weather gets chilly, and even dips below zero. When you’re petite and looking for a puffer, spring for one with a narrowed waist and not too much down fill to avoid looking like the abominable snowman (but a warmer one).

—Tyler

These petite-friendly coats have us pining for new layers. Need a new coat or jacket to keep warm this fall and winter? Take your style quiz, order a Fix and ask your stylist for a coat or jacket in a style that’s catching your eye. Sit back and relax as you wait for your Fix to arrive. Then, try everything on in the comfort of your home. You’re never required to schedule more than one Fix at a time and shipping and returns are always free.

How To Wear Trends for the Beginner Fashionista

Stitch Fix September Trend

Pair Your Sleeves With Cool Tones

If you’re a beginner, and unsure about adding too many bows in your hair (or on your shirt) try a simpler approach like this cool wrap blouse. While it still nods to the detail trend, the monochromatic hues balance out the fun and flirty silhouettes!

Stylist Tip: If you’re just getting started with statement sleeves, keep it simple and pair them with your more basic bottoms—like solid slacks or jeans.

Stitch Fix September Trend

Pair Florals with Cargo

Have a go-to jeans and t-shirt outfit for getting errands done? Pair a classic cargo vest with a few floral details for an edgy-meets-feminine look. Plus, the cargo vest adds structure to your hangin’ out and relaxin’ outfit.

Stylist Tip: Dress up your utility staples with a statement accessory—like a bold handbag or an eye-catching necklace.

HOW TO WEAR TRENDS FOR THE INTERMEDIATE FASHIONISTA

Stitch Fix September Trend

Wear Statement Sleeves as an Off the Shoulder

Double whammy! For our intermediate fashionistas who are ready to take this trend to the next level, try a two-for-one look like this printed off-the-shoulder tunic with bell sleeves! Wear it with colorful mules and a utilitarian crossbody. Did we just sneak the season’s biggest trends into one outfit? You bet we did.

Stylist Tip: For a more laidback look, go for distressed denim. Looking for more polish? Get classy with a darker wash.

Wear Cargo with Bold Colors

The utility trend is known for being neutral, but it doesn’t mean it has to be boring. In fact, we recommend wearing bold prints and colors to spice up your look. Add some pep to your step with printed slip-ons and a pop of color blouse. Who says opposite colors don’t look fabulous together?

Stylist Tip: Throw on a classic beige trench coat to add some professional layers to an otherwise bright and bold style.

TRENDS FOR THE EXPERT STYLE MAVEN

Stitch Fix September Trend

Take fashion risks with new silhouette

You’re a risk-taker, so take the bull by the horns with a bell-sleeve blouse worn under a wide-leg jumper. Pair it with a crossbody bag for that extra fearless femme vibe to balance out your one-piece. Get ready to walk the streets like a runway!

Stylist Tip: Try toning down the colors on this ensemble for a super chic and monochromatic look!

Stitch Fix September Trend

Combine Flirty Femme and Tomboy Chic

Double denim? More like double takes! Try doubling up on style categories. A classic structured cargo jacket with a pair of fringed jeans and some sexy, strappy heels gives the air of girl power. Grab your staple cargo jacket and pair it with a fringed-hem jean and some sexy heels for an outfit that says ‘boss lady!’ Just the right look for when you need to tell everyone who’s the boss around here.

Stylist Tip: Slipping into a pair of chunky heels in a fringed hem jeans that hit just at the ankle makes your legs look like they go for miles.

Summer to Fall Transition Outfits

How to Wear Your Blouses into Fall

Be a breath of fresh air when cool, crisp fall breezes through. No need to pack away your airy blouses from spring and summer— just try giving them a slightly more polished look to reflect the changing seasons (and keep yourself warm!). We love layering with structured second layers like moto jackets and ankle booties.

Also Wear Them With:

  • A curve-hugging pencil skirt
  • A thick, cozy scarf
  • A long, cool-toned trench coat

Summer to Fall Transition Outfits

How to Wear a Sundress into Fall

Sundresses get a reputation for a being a summer-only staple piece, but that’s just not true.! Make your favorite sundress last you through the fall by adding a solid denim jacket or a chunky open cardigan. Top it off with slip-on oxfords and a piece of statement jewelry, like a Wonder Woman-esque cuff. The in-between months (like August) are a great time to revamp your jewelry, especially with holiday season approaching fast.

Also Wear Them With:

  • A thick pair of tights
  • A chic pair of ankle booties
  • A knit beanie

Summer to Fall Transition Outfits

How to Wear Light Wash Jeans into Fall

Dark wash denim may take center stage during the chillier months, but don’t shy away from your summer lights just yet. Light wash denim can add a more carefree vibe to an autumn staple: the infamous plaid button down. We love throwing on a pair of colorful booties, an embroidered utility jacket for extra texture and an easy crossbody to store all of your fall essentials.

Also Wear Them With:

  • Bell sleeve blouses in rich fall hues (like plum & pumpkin)
  • A chunky cable knit sweater
  • Chic knee high boots

Summer to Fall Transition Outfits

How to Wear Your Sneakers Year-Round

Sneakers are a year-round shoe option—don’t let anybody tell you otherwise! We love glammin’ up our city sneaks in the fall with sleek leggings and simple (but stylish) pullovers. Put it all together with a puffy vest and backpack (they’re not just for kids!). If you want to get fancy with your feet, try grabbing some colorful sneakers instead of neutral black or white.

Also Wear Them With:

  • A simple pair of dark skinnies
  • Trim midi-skirts
  • Pencil trousers and a button-up (sneaks can be worn to work)

How are you going to transition your summer staples into fall? Tell us!

We can’t skirt around it—picking the right piece to highlight your shape is no walk in the park! If you’re an hourglass shape looking for a new skirt, read on to see how to complement your curves.

Here are the best skirts for an hourglass body type.

Stitch Fix Women’s rack image of skirts in red floral, blush pink, beige, teal floral and black on wooden hangers.

A+ for A-line

A true no-brainer for curves, A-line skirts sit at the waist and gently jut out with flouncy femininity. The effect? A silhouette that complements an hourglass shape to a tee. Tuck blouses and even basic tees into this style and reach for a pointed-toe flat or a shoe with a little bit of a heel to elongate the leg line.

Penciled In

When you’ve got (seriously enviable) curves, why hide them? Reach for a skirt that’s structured and clings to your figure. Bonus: Pencil skirts are a workwear favorite and always nail a polished look. Try a modern envelope-cut version with a fitted, wrap-front blouse for ultra waist-defining asymmetry.

That’s a (Maxi) Wrap

Ready for a little drama? Maxi skirts are a must-have for hourglass shapes and strike a balance between casual and glamorous. Try a maxi in a wrap cut to draw the eye across curvy hips and up to the waist. Knot your knit tee at the waist and add a moto jacket to take your maxi from summer into fall.

Instead of letting your skirts hibernate through the winter, try these Stitch Fix tips for styling these pieces in the colder months.

Create a Foundation

To keep your legs warm this fall and winter, stock up on an assortment of tights and leggings to layer beneath your skirts. We suggest classic colors such as black, navy and camel. For a fun color blocked style, try a pair in your favorite bold color such as eggplant, mustard or cranberry.

tights

Playful Patterns

The Flora Striped Fit and Flare Skirt ($48) has a great balanced stripe for fall. Make sure to pair this piece with seasonally appropriate complementary colors such as camel leggings and rich brown boots. To add a pop of color we styled the skirt with our Aurinda Color Blocked Sweater ($88) and our Leopard Print Infinity Scarf ($28).

Striped Skirt

Work It

For an office-ready look, we paired the Fiore Box Pleated Skirt ($98) with a blouse, boots and belted trench. Starting with navy tights as the bottom layer we added the sapphire-hued skirt, tucking the Dawson Heart Print Blouse ($68) gently into the waistband. Complete the look with booties and an essential outer layer such as the Liz Double Breasted Trench Coat ($148).

Blue Skirt

Holiday Flair

The saturated crimson color of the Isabella Pleated Skirt ($58) makes this piece perfect for any holiday-themed event. The on-trend faux leather details in the Archie Front Ruffle Faux Leather Trim Blouse ($48) and the Adella Faux Leather Trim Moto Jacket ($88) add a subtle edge to the flirty and feminine skirt. Finish the look with sleek black tights and burgundy heels.

red skirt

There’s no need to skirt around your minis, maxis and midis when the temperatures dip. Are you ready for a fall refresh? Take your style quiz, order a Fix and let your stylist send you cold-weather essentials to wear with your favorite skirts. Whether you’re looking for an update for work or play, all you need to do is sit back and relax. We’ll send five pieces handpicked just for you, right to your doorstep. Keep what you love, return the rest. Shipping and returns are always free.

Now, the question is: what do you wear? Here’s where the Stitch Fix Stylists come in. From first through 100th date, we’ve got you covered.

What’s your relationship status?

If you don’t mind us asking.

Where’s your date?

Where are you headed? We promise we won’t crash your date.

What to Wear on a First Date

So you just landed an exciting first date through Match, let your personality and sense of style shine through! It’s all about getting to know each other, so start by putting your best foot forward with the perfect first date outfit.

First date outfit essentials:

  • Statement making accessories
  • Breezy & easy to wear blouse
  • Layer-friendly jacket

What to Wear When You’re Getting Serious

Things are heating up, or maybe you two decided that you only have googly eyes for each other. They already adore your shining personality, but it’s always fun to keep up the heat for a date night.

Getting serious outfit essentials:

  • A little black dress (or two)
  • Perfect jeans
  • Delicate jewels

What to Wear When You’re in a Long-term Relationship

You’ve probably become pretty comfortable around each other, maybe been through some ups and downs, and you’ve proven the test of time! Whether it’s celebrating months or years, show them how special their company still means to you with a date night outfit that looks nothing like your favorite jammies they’ve seen so many times!

Long-term relationship outfits:

  • Statement-making tops
  • On-trend denim
  • Simple sandals

Movie Night

When it comes to movie date outfits, it’s a good idea to keep it casual & cool. Brave those chilly movie theater temps with a breezy blouse and your favorite skinny jeans. And when they pull out the old “yawn” move, just let it slide.

[slideshow_deploy id=’34368′]

Hiking

Ain’t no mountain high enough! For a hiking date outfit, layer up in lightweight outerwear. Opt for breathable knits and layer on a too-cool jacket, like a bomber. Then, keep your hands free with a utility-inspired backpack—it’s the perfect carryall for snacks, water bottles or whatever the great outdoors throws at you.

[slideshow_deploy id=’34370′]

Dinner

If you’re going to the symphony, a broadway show or the nicest restaurant in town, slip into something feminine and timeless like a sheath dress or a classic moto jacket. Throw on your favorite pumps or sandals (weather-permitting) to make your RSVP.

[slideshow_deploy id=’34378′]

Drinks

The go-to get-to-know-you date! It could be a super swanky new bar that just opened, or maybe it’s a fun and kitschy local dive. No matter the venue, an easy pair of distressed jeans and a flirty top (or dress) to match is a great way to make an impression while still keeping it laid-back and casual.

[slideshow_deploy id=’34380′]

Sports Event

If you and your date are well-versed in what a strike or a triple-double is, take your date to the next inning by heading to a game! First of all, bring out your team’s colors whether it’s a striped shirt in their hues or a cool pop of color on your jacket. Reach for your comfiest jeans so you can be ready to cheer on your team all the way into OT.

[slideshow_deploy id=’34382′]

Museum

Ready to soak up some art and culture? Traipsing through museums with your boo is a great way to show off your knowledge of finer things as well as broaden your intellectual horizons. So, why not try to build an outfit that reflects the pieces you’re looking at—like A-line skirts for your modernist minimalists, or feminine details for the romantics!

Looking for the perfect date outfit? Our expert stylists are standing by to help. Take your style quiz, order a Fix and be sure to let your stylist know what your date activity is. You’ll receive 5 carefully curated pieces to try on at home. Keep what you love and send back the rest. As always, shipping and returns are free.

Holiday party outfits

‘Tis the season to look great (and feel even better). If you’re anything like us, you’re so ready to break out your favorite festive party looks and celebrate in style. Lucky for you, the season has plenty of party-worthy occasions (and festive outfits!) in store.

Whether you’ll be toasting at work soireés, intimate family dinners, casual gift exchanges or more formal affairs, our Stylists have assembled the ultimate guide to women’s holiday party outfits. Every dress code, any venue…you’ll be ready. So, prepare to break out allll the sparkle and shine…and find your perfect party looks right here.

outfit for office holiday party

What to Wear to an Office Holiday Party

The right office holiday party attire for women means adding a few pieces to add some merry vibes to your professional attire. Whether your company hosts a post-work event in the conference room or carries the fun to an offsite happy hour, it’s all about striking the right balance between formal and festive, looking polished all the while.

The strategy is simple: “Start your day with more simple pieces, then elevate your look for the party with a quick addition of sparkly heels, a velvety red lip, or a suede handbag,” says Stylist Landess.

For your base, stick to your everyday look. A pleated skirt or a wide-leg trouser and blouse will take you through the day in style. When it’s time to party, add a show-stopping statement piece—we like a velvet blazer or metallic moto jacket for those edgy, festive vibes. To finish the look, a metallic shoe or sparkling jewelry is always a good idea.

Still unsure of how to get that office party-ready style? Your Stylist can help! Schedule a Fix for everything you need to go from work to wonder-full.

outfit for holiday dinner party

What to Wear to a Holiday Dinner Party

Whether it’s a cozy family gathering or an upscale soirée, your outfit sets the tone for the evening. Comfort is key for enjoying the feast, but looking festive is just as important—after all, a little extra sparkle never hurt!

When you think of a classic holiday party outfit, it’s a dress, right? A timeless black, burgundy or green holiday party dress is always an easy, festive favorite (bonus points for sparkle). For intimate gatherings, try a soft knit sweater-dress or a flowy midi for a relaxed yet refined look.

Want to shake things up a bit? Our Stylist Landess suggests swapping the traditional dress for trending leopard-print pants paired with a sexy skin-tight bodysuit to spice things up.

In milder climates, strappy sandals work beautifully. Party-goers in colder regions can try sandals over opaque tights for a bold accent. Alternately, chic knee-high boots are stylish and warm. Finish with seasonal touches like glam jewelry plus a chic shoulder bag to keep essentials close during hors d’oeuvres and cocktails.

outfit for casual holiday party

What to Wear to a Casual Holiday Party

Holiday party attire has embraced a more relaxed vibe in recent years, so you don’t have to choose between looking festive and feeling comfortable. From gift exchanges to happy hours, low-key celebrations are a seasonal staple—and we’ve got you covered, from head to toe.

For an effortless holiday or Christmas party outfit, start with a slip skirt. “Slip skirts are my go-to must-have pieces for the colder months, just add a sweater and heeled booties and you have such a put-together and comfortable look,” says our Stylist Landess. This versatile piece is a holiday hero, pairing beautifully with almost all textures. We love to style it with a cashmere t-shirt for minimalist luxury, or add contrast (and warmth!) with a rustic sweater.

If skirts aren’t your style, the classic “jeans and a going-out top” combo never disappoints. Wear just-right jeans with a silky blouse for a touch of glam. Or pair a high-waisted, wide-leg jean with a slightly-cropped cardigan for a cozy touch.

The holiday season is also the perfect time to let your shoes and accessories shine— and we mean literally. Metallic Mary Janes or glossy patent boots match the holiday mood, and statement earrings or a velvet clutch add extra flair. Not a fan of sparkle? A bold red lipstick can transform any outfit into a festive masterpiece.

Whatever you choose, keep it comfy, stylish and so-you.

outfit for formal holiday party

What to Wear to a Formal Holiday Party

We love any excuse to get a little fancy, and the season’s swanky soireés and glam holiday galas are the perfect opportunity to pull out all the stops.

A formal holiday party dress is always perfect for picture-ready looks. When it comes to a formal Hanukkah or Christmas gathering, or even New Year’s Eve dress ideas, fur, feathers and anything that sparkles or shimmers are showstoppers. To make your entrance over-the-top dazzling, look for sleek silhouettes, bold hues or all-over sequins and shine.

Prefer understated chic? “A neutral monochromatic look, like a denim jacket with your favorite matching jeans, is the look for you,” says Stylist Landess. Put your own spin on the demure look with luxe fabrics like velvet and satin, and subtle details like kitten heels with a bow.

For that extra special finishing piece, reach for an elegant topper like a faux fur jacket or sleek blazer to keep cozy while looking fab. Pull it all together with bold jewelry, a shimmery purse and a glass of something bubbly—or whatever warms you this time of year. Cheers!

thanksgiving outfits for women

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and we’re already dreaming of stuffing, pumpkin pie and the main course—the perfect outfit. When it comes to what to wear on Thanksgiving, there’s a lot to consider: your look has to be roomy enough for that second slice of dessert, chic enough to post pics to your social feed and comfy enough to kick back for a post-meal nap (no shame in that game).

Between planning menus, table settings and oven schedules, you’ve got a lot on your proverbial plate. That’s where Stitch Fix comes in! From casual to dressy and friendsgiving to fam-giving, our ultimate guide to Thanksgiving dinner dressing has got you covered with outfits so good, they might just upstage the feast.

formal thanksgiving outfits for women

What to wear to a formal Thanksgiving dinner

If you’ve got a dressy dinner on the cal, it’s time to pull out all the stops. Aside from all of the friends and family you’ll spend the evening with, here’s another reason to give thanks: fall’s dressed-up silhouettes look as chic as they feel comfortable (major score).

A silky midi dress feels like luxe pajamas, but looks ultra-sleek.Reach for body-skimming silhouettes in entrance-making tones of deep chocolate, rich cranberry or sage green,” says Stylist Courtney.

While dresses are the obvious choice for a formal feast, they’re not your only option. Don’t be afraid to shake things up—ask your Stylist for an effortless, one-and-done jumpsuit. You’ll save time getting dressed and can strategize more pressing matters, (like your first stop at the buffet).

As for the finishing touches, late November evenings call for an extra-toasty topper. Bundle up in statement outerwear, like a faux fur coat (which is basically a chic, wearable blanket) or opt for a velvet jacket for an ultra-festive vibe. Into an edgier look? “Don’t forget the tried-and-true moto jacket cut in leather or suede,” says Courtney.

Before you head out the door, grab a shimmering silver clutch or add a hit of shine with a gilded heel, and you’re ready for your seat at the table.

What to wear to a casual Thanksgiving dinner

Hosting a low-key gathering at home, or attending the type of Thanksgiving that revolves around lounging in the family room? A laid-back holiday calls for casual Thanksgiving attire that feels chic, but not stuffy. We’re not necessarily suggesting you start the evening in sweats (unless they’re cashmere?), keeping your look comfy is the move.

Break out the jeans (bonus: grab a stretch style), or quintessential fall cords to add a hit of texture to your look. Either way, Stylist Courtney suggests of-the-moment wide-leg cuts, which are comfortable while looking styled.

Another fave option: a swingy printed dress or skirt feels polished but not overdressed, especially when paired with a chunky crewneck or turtleneck sweater. Keep your shoe choice comfortable with ankle boots, ballet flats or high-style sneakers—they’ve got you covered for that post-meal walk around the neighborhood.

What to wear to a family Thanksgiving dinner

Holiday traditions look different for every family. Whether you’re hosting at home or heading to see out-of-town relatives, you’ll want to feel your best around your fam.

If the goal is scoring a seat at the adult’s table, a flowy, printed dress is a foolproof silhouette that reads elevated and put-together. Stylist Courtney’s favorite print? “A ditsy or prairie pattern in a moody autumn palette.”

Then, layer in cozy pieces to help you stay warm and look cool: add a fitted long-sleeve knit or turtleneck underneath your mini, midi or maxi for extra dimension and a pop of color. Shearling-trimmed jackets, chunky cardis or even denim jackets are all solid ways to top off your look. And for the final course? Bring it all home with a block-heeled boot and a statement earring.

friendsgiving outfits for women

What to wear to friendsgiving

As the old saying goes, friends are the family you choose, and a friendsgiving get-together is a perfect way to celebrate your chosen family. Typically a bit more laid-back, friendsgiving is the perfect chance to impress friends with your on-point style.

Being around your closest circle gives you full permission to debut a personality-packed outfit. If your vibe is edgy, keep it sleek in a leather jacket, fitted denim and a silky top (you never know when dinner will lead to a post-party night out).

Are you the always-polished friend of the group? Relaxed-yet-tailored trousers look flawless with a sleeveless knit top or a chunky sweater. Go head-to-toe monochrome in a rich, fall hue and make room for a generous serving of compliments. A swingy, printed dress and an oversized shacket is a no-fail option if your style M.O. is cool and carefree—just add suede or leather boots to amp up the late-fall energy.

Summer is falling into autumn, and apple picking is on our list of favorite fall activities. A time-honored fall tradition, we love a fruitful trip to the apple orchard. Plus, who can say no to a homemade apple pie? Not sure what to wear apple picking? We’re whipping up a concoction of insta-worthy apple-picking outfits sure to win you the blue ribbon for style.

What to Wear Apple-Picking: Indulge in Ripe Fall Colors and Prints

The rolling hills of a fruit orchard influence the spicy autumnal color palette that complements any apple-picking outfit. It’s no wonder fall is the most colorful time of the year. Think glossy green apples, golden yellow grass with a smoky orange sky at sunset. These gorgeous tones are trending for the season. Pair them with timeless fall prints like plaids and stripes to fall florals and Fair Isles. These color and print combinations are sure to resolve any “what to wear while apple picking” conundrums.

Get Picky in Plaid

Modern iterations of plaid evoke outdoorsy vibes that absolutely align with your apple-picking outfits. Long gone are the days of plaid that only adorned menswear-inspired button-up shirts. Update your plaid pick by wearing this perennial favorite print in a henley-style flannel. Opt for an oversized fit paired with leggings and boots as you sip on hot apple cider in the orchard. Switch up your seasonal style by choosing a plaid skirt, sweatshirt or shacket. No matter how you wear this pattern, your ensemble will be ripe for the (apple) picking.

Stunning Stripes

Stripes and apple picking––is there anything more enduring? Add a positively preppy feel to your apple-picking outfit when you choose a classic stripe. Try a striped button-down loosely front-tucked into your jeans and reach for a pair of leather loafers. Feeling bold? Give mixing prints and patterns a go. Accomplish this by wearing a cozy color-block crew neck sweater with a floral headband. Level up your look with wide-leg pants that will harmoniously sway in the breeze. Lace up your lug boots before setting off on your apple hunt.

Fall into Florals

The feminine floral blooms that adorned spring and summer wear get a seasonal refresh for fall. If this is your first foray into floral designs, start small. Add a pop of flower power to your apple-picking outfit and choose a micro-floral print. Wear cropped straight-leg jeans over a bodysuit and toss a Granny Smith in the pocket of your grandpa cardigan. Add a pair of floral adorned kicks. They are another awesome option for what to wear apple picking. These sneakers help you crunch through the fallen orchard leaves so stylishly.

Apple Picking Tip #1: Looking for apples that are ready to eat off the branch? Select an apple from branches on the outside of the apple tree. These apples ripen first. If you want a little more counter longevity, pick apples closer to the tree trunk.

Apple-Picking Outfits that Keep the Perfect Temperature: What To Wear In Any Weather

It’s cooling down outside, and the weather is just as crisp as biting into a freshly picked Red Delicious apple. Wondering what to wear apple picking in every type of weather? Whether it’s sunny and 75 degrees or cold and cloudy, there’s a festive fall look that’s suited just for you. Here are a few apple-picking outfits to wear while taking in fun apple farm activities.

Take a Hayride in a Sundress on a Warm Day

Give yourself a well-deserved break from apple picking and hitch a tractor ride on a hay bale. A breezy wrap dress keeps you cool on a sunny day. Don your dress with a pair of ankle booties and keep a denim jacket on hand. Wearing a dress with a denim jacket adds effortless texture to your look. Tie it around your waist to evoke fall vibes on a warm day––now, that’s what to wear while apple picking. Is the hay bale itching your legs? Bring a blanket to sit on for a more comfortable ride. It will come in handy for a picture-perfect picnic in a Gala apple grove.

Turn Apples Into Cider When It’s Cool in Corduroy

You’ve hand-picked your apples, now what? Try your hand at cider pressing when the day takes a turn for the cold. Be prepared no matter what Mother Nature throws your way with a layered apple-picking outfit. Lean into a corduroy shirt over a simple tank paired with worn-in, distressed denim. Slip into ankle rain boots for when your cider splashes—got yourself into a sticky situation? They are easy to rinse off and head onward to your next apple-themed adventure.

Cold Climates Call for Indoor Activities in Cozy Clothes

Head inside to warm up after apple picking when a chilly frost sets in. Not only do we have you dressed for what to wear apple picking, but all the activities you’ll find at an apple grove. Take time out to enjoy apple farm-to-fork foods. From apple donuts to caramel apples and apple dumplings, you’ll find something to warm you up. Your apple-picking outfit will also help you stay warm. Have a pair of overalls laying around? Style with a bodysuit and a cozy duster cardigan layered on top. Denim overalls with stretch will give you the flexibility you need to pick apples or indulge in tasty treats.

Apple Picking Tip #2: Wondering what constitutes the perfect apple to pick? Look for apples that are firm to the touch with no bruising. Don’t forget that apples come in a variety of shades and sizes––color is not an indicator of ripeness.

Baked to Perfection: Lovely Layered Apple-Picking Outfits

Layers are the name of the apple-picking game when the leaves show off their colorful side. Fall 2021 women’s fashion trends offer an amazing collection of lavish layers we’re loving. Shackets, grandpa cardigans and teddy bear coats will instantly upgrade your apple-picking outfit. When it comes to what to wear apple picking, we have the answers on how to stay warm in style. Let’s dive into a few layering pieces to pile on the fall fun.

Shackets and Chore Jackets Made for Apple Picking

Looking to add a lightweight layer to your apple-picking outfit? Look no further than the shacket. Stylistically similar to a Barbour jacket, this style is a mash-up of a flannel button-down shirt and a jacket. Here’s how to wear shackets like a fall fashion pro. Layer it over a festive and full of history Fair Isle sweater and high-rise pants. A quilted shacket shields you from the elements, while a canvas choice protects you from unruly tree branches. As another option, wear a chore or utility jacket. If your apples are overflowing out of your basket, stow them in your handy cargo pockets. Wrap up your look with a pair of duck boots to tread through the apple grove.

Grandpa Cardigans and Teddy Bear Coats

Leap into layers and pack on the texture with grandpa-style cardigans and teddy bear coats. This season’s oversized, button-up cardigans are unlike your grandpa’s vintage sweater. Seek out this style in a chunky knit for an endearing, handmade effect. Natural details like wooden buttons or unbleached yarn offer a cold-weather take on the Cottagecore trend. Alternatively, teddy bear coats add an equally warm and welcoming aesthetic to your apple-picking outfit. Toss either of these cozy layers over a tee, add a mini-floral print skirt and tall boots to stay trend-forward.

Apple Picking Tip #3: Spotted the perfect apple? Here’s how to pick it. Hold the apple with the palm of your hand. Gently pull upwards and twist. Try your best to pick your prize with the stem still attached. This helps your apple keep longer. Accidentally drop it on the ground? No sweat. Pick it up and stow it away––it’s still good, promise.

What to Wear Apple-Picking: Sweeten Your Apple-Picking Outfit with Shoes and Accessories à la mode

Think of shoes and accessories as the vanilla ice cream atop a freshly baked apple pie. Your apple-picking outfit is vibrant, and choosing the right shoes and accessories takes it to the next level. Here’s what to be on the lookout for when deciding what to wear apple picking

Bustle around in Boots

Boots are the it shoe of autumn and decidedly your best option when choosing what to wear while apple picking. Warmer fall days call for perforated ankle boots to keep your feet safe and cool. Dewy grounds call for waterproof boots, so pick above-the-ankle rain boots or hiking-inspired boots. Wear them with printed or heavy knit socks that peek out of the tops to show a bit of your personality. If your style is edgy at its (apple) core, moto boots are just what the orchard calls for. Talk about apple picking-perfection kicks!

Hangout with a Hands-Free Bag While Apple Picking

Apples are heavy, so only pack the necessities to tote along with you. Opt for a small backpack or belt bag for your next excursion. These carryalls are big enough for your phone, keys, wallet and hand sanitizer while leaving you hands-free for the picking. A sling bag is another chic option. Apple picking is dirty work, and you might find a new stain or two. Don’t forget to stash a handy stain remover pen in your bag. You never know when you might need to remove a spill or get grass stains out of your jeans.

Shine Bright in Small Jewelry

Like your bag, keep your jewelry small. Bulky, statement jewelry could snag or get in the way. Instead, wear simple bar necklaces, stud earrings and bangle bracelets to add shine to your harvest-ready ensemble. Alternatively, a stack of rings are perfectly polished like a shiny apple. Don’t forget to wear a snuggly beanie to keep you toasty from head to toe.

Think of a capsule wardrobe as the building blocks of your closet that support the foundation of your personal style. Start by investing in timeless, classic pieces that set your current fashion #mood—then add trends, color, prints and patterns for each season.

What Tops to Have In A Capsule Wardrobe

Button-Down Chambray Shirt
Not only can you pair this piece with your wildest prints, but you can also unbutton it and use it as a lightweight layer for all seasons.

White T-shirt
Get back to basics! It never hurts to have a white tee in your dresser drawer, especially on those days when you just don’t know what to wear. Pair it with jeans and a blazer on casual Friday, or rock it with shorts or a skirt on the weekend. Plus, they layer perfectly as an undershirt for an itchy sweater in the winter.

Button-Down Silk Blouse
Looking for a luxe must-have piece? Splurge on a silk blouse in a timeless neutral like black, navy or blush. Pair them with jeans or trousers for a look that’s always chic & put together.

Striped Top
Striped shirts aren’t just for sailors! If you’re new or schooled in the art of prints and patterns, a striped shirt always makes a great outfit. Feeling daring? Pair it with a floral printed skirt. Feeling classic? Wear it with your favorite pair of jeans.

Solid blouse

Whether you love a feminine wrap, peplum or a structured, down-to-business button-down, you can’t go wrong with a solid blouse in your wardrobe mix.

Chunky Knit Sweater
When the temp drops, staying cozy is key. Find one (or three) super soft chunky knit sweaters to pull you through all seasons. Yes, you can wear sweaters in the spring!

What Bottoms to Have For Your Capsule Wardrobe

Dark Wash Jeans

Spring for the denim trends you love, but always have a pair of dark wash jeans on hand. A wash that’s in between goes with everything, from your blackest blouse to your whitest tee.

Light Wash Boyfriend Jeans
Alright, we know boyfriend jeans can be a little dicey for some body shapes—but we also know that they’re the best jeans to pull on for when you’re feeling casual. These weekend warriors will keep you comfortable with their relaxed fit, but look polished with heels and a blazer if the occasion calls for it.

Pencil skirt

A pencil skirt is not only silhouette-flattering, but you’ll never be bored with this look because modern pencil skirts are not just for work anymore. Printed patterns are a fun addition to your weekday and weekend look. Mix in bold-colored patterned tops with sneakers to brighten up your brunch look this weekend.

Leggings
What could possibly be more comfortable than jeans? Have you tried a trusty pair of thick leggings? Dress them up with heels and a long, jewel-tone tunic or a pair of pointed toe-flats (or booties) and a chunky sweater and you’ve got a match made in comfort and style heaven.

White denim

Whoever said white denim is reserved for the summer months is completely wrong. We love white jeans paired with a snake print ankle boot and a smart-fitting structured blazer. Add a heavy overcoat and scarf, and you can really layer up for the colder months.

Sweater Dress
Nothing’s more classic than a sleeveless sweater dress—especially in black. It is the one color that you can wear anywhere, and it can be dressed up with heels or down with flats, depending on the occasion. In the cooler months, layer it with a turtleneck or a white button down for a polished work look.

Capsule Wardrobe Jackets

Black Blazer
Don’t keep a blazer just for the office. Even if you’re not the type of woman who keeps it classic with your daily wardrobe, it’s always good to have a blazer in your closet. Trust us, it’ll come in handy when you’re tired of your utility or moto jacket, or have a surprise job interview.

Denim Jacket

Focus on finding a good-fitting denim jacket with a wash that goes well with your existing wardrobe so that you can get the maximum use out of it. The right one will be a favorite pairing with everything, from dresses in the springtime to casual khakis to white and dark wash jeans. It’s an all-around fave.

Trench Coat
Whether you’re channeling Audrey Hepburn or need a never-fail jacket, a trench coat is the one jacket that will never go out of style.

Capsule Wardrobe Accessories

Tote Bag
A cute carry-all in a bright hue for stashing your essentials is key for busy women everywhere, whether you’re a mom-on-the-go or a workforce commuter.

Ankle Booties
The reason why we heart ankle booties so much? There’s a pair for every style of outfit you can dream up. It’s just as easy to experiment with a super-hot trend like kitten heel ankle boots or stick with the classics with a flat pair of Chelsea boots. Trust us, your wardrobe won’t regret it.

Flats
For the days when you’re not feeling the pinch or the need for extra height, swap your shoes for a pair of flats. From menswear-inspired loafers to ultra-girly d’Orsay flats, you’ve got a pair for nearly every day of the week.

Sneakers
It never hurts to keep things casual. Fashion sneakers have trended their way into capsule closets everywhere for their versatility. Neutral sneakers go with everything, especially an easy jeans and tee outfit.

Pumps
Finish off your workday wardrobe #likeaboss with a pair of no-nonsense pumps in black or a fierce print. They’ll do double duty on date night too.

ADDING COLOR TO YOUR CAPSULE WARDROBE

Color is key to building your perfect capsule wardrobe, but also giving it new life when a new season rolls around. When you’re ready to dabble in new hues, look to your skin tone to influence which colors you’ll reach for next. But one rule of thumb we have—bold hues like tomato red and royal blue look great on everyone! Another tip? Choosing shades in a unified scheme, like all warm tones or all cool tones that will allow for easy mixing and matching.

Here are our favorite colors to add to a capsule wardrobe:

  1. Rust: This shade is perfect for adding warmth to your everyday basics—and it pairs perfectly with navy and camel.
  2. Crimson: Drab hues have you dragging? Red is a power color—wear it wildly.
  3. Millennial Pink: Add feminine flair to any neutral with pretty shades of this of-the-moment hue.
  4. Green: Adding in hues like sage, hunter, and kelly green to add lushness to your palette.

How to build a capsule wardrobe

Here’s How To Accessorize Your Capsule Wardrobe

Add something metallic

When it comes to accessorizing your capsule wardrobe, jewelry should be your first stop. Just like you built up your capsule wardrobe, build up your jewelry chest with pieces in your favorite metal (think gold, silver & platinum).

Here are the perfect jewelry pieces to add to your capsule wardrobe:

  1. Simple stud earrings, like faux (or real) diamond or round metal beads.
  2. 16 or 18′ inch necklace in gold or silver.
  3. One sleek bangle.
  4. A classic watch with a leather or metal band.

Add Belts to Your Capsule Wardrobe

Borrow from the boys and add a black (or cognac) belt to your capsule wardrobe:

  1. A thin, black belt to wear with an all-black outfit.
  2. A 1-1.5′ thick brown leather belt to wear with skinny jeans and a striped shirt.
  3. Scarves can be belts too! Take a silky thin scarf and thread it through your belt loops of your favorite jeans!

Scarves are a capsule wardrobe must

Scarves are your cold weather friend. Here are the best scarves to add to your capsule wardrobe:

  1. Blanket scarves will not only keep you cozy, but perfectly boho when you let the ends hang loose.
  2. A silky square scarf adds a preppy vibe to your button-down blouses and (bonus!) can be tied to your purse strap for a pop of color! In conclusion? The key to building a capsule wardrobe is all about investing in versatile, high-quality pieces that you can style year after year. Oh, and having fun. You should always have fun with your style.

Style Forecast: Top Women’s Fashion Trends of 2025

2025 is just days away, which means our annual Style Forecast is back! Sometimes “trends” can be a little daunting—we get it. Luckily, there’s a mix of new classics and fun freshness to try, so there’s truly something for everyone. The best part: we figure out the trends, so you don’t have to.

Of course, in typical Stitch Fix fashion, our 2025 Style Forecast is based on comprehensive data and compelling insights from our Stylists and clients. We’re predicting what’s new on the style scene today, and where trends are headed. So, whether you’re a year-round style savant, or your New Year’s resolution is a much-needed wardrobe refresh, consider this your style cheat sheet.

Check out our sneak peak of all the 2025 women’s fashion trends you’ll be seeing everywhere this year (including in your own closet)!

Corner Booth: Make Plans with Elevated Night-out Style

Gone are the days of wondering what to wear out. Now, you can hit the town in elevated nighttime-ready styles that exude maximum confidence. These bold outfits for evenings out are perfect for any and every occasion—cheers to that.

“Bold prints and unexpected silhouettes  let you lean into that ‘it girl’ energy. I love to spice things up with pops of zebra, snake and leopard,” says our Stylist, Landess. Unexpected silhouettes, jewel tones and faux leather make for major statements and cheeky conversation starters. With the rise in animal print popularity, prepare to take a walk on the wide side.

Your key piece: the going-out top. 92% of our Stylists see this style as their most exciting piece of 2025! This season’s versions have extra oomph: think embellishments, cut-outs or eye-catching fabrics (hint: make it metallic). Pair these showstoppers with your quintessential favorites like high-waisted black jeans and your trusty moto jacket. It’s giving grown-up “It girl.”

Easy Street: Relaxed Silhouettes—and Attitude

It’s the year of letting loose. This trend leans into relaxed silhouettes and oversized shapes that give off an effortlessly-chill vibe. Our Stylist Missy says “Easy Street is defined by its relaxed styles, oversized shapes and that effortless slouch…so chic.” These relaxed styles for women are all about slouchy tailoring, wide-leg pants and loosely woven knits that warrant a “Wow, you look cool” compliment.

The key to a successfully styled oversized look? “Balance volume with structure,” says Stylist, Dania. The “how” behind that can feel intimidating at first, so we worked with our Stylists to develop a simple formula that makes relaxed dressing, well, easy. It’s called the Stitch Fix “1-2-1” Rule, and it’s your simple shortcut to nailing the oversized trend.

The Stitch Fix “1-2-1” Rule:
1 part fitted for a sleek foundation
2 parts slouchy to create that relaxed fit
1 part structured to punctuate the look with contrast

Focusing on balance ensures that you’re wearing the clothes, and they’re not wearing you. In action, some of our favorite “1-2-1” Rule combos are:

  1. A fitted bodysuit + wide-leg jeans + oversized button-down + streamlined sneaks
  2. A fitted knit top + relaxed cargos + chunky pullover (over the shoulders) + lug-sole boots
  3. Fitted slim jeans + chunky sweater + oversized topcoat + lug loafers

Prepare to see this trend on every block—let your Stylist know if this laid-back look is right up your street.

Ranch Revival: Country Chic meets City Cool

We’re calling it now: cowboy-core is here to stay in 2025, but now with a more sophisticated evolution. You can’t deny the data: our Western-inspired boot sales have doubled since past fall! So, dust off those bad boys and pair ‘em with an ultra-feminine dress (82% of Stylists predict that this will be a 2025 client fave).

This trend is all of the best from the women’s western wear: denim on denim, prairie-print florals, fringe and more. Take the Western-inspired fashion up a notch: “Nostalgic western prints and fabrics blend with modern silhouettes for sophisticated style,” says Stylist Lorraine.  Get that country style look and feel, without ever leaving the city. Consider it a whisper of yee-haw, if you will.

Stitch Fix Color of the Year: Wisteria

Drumroll, please…our official color of the year is: Wisteria! Inspired by the whimsical wisteria flower—posessed of a range of purple tones within its petals—there’s a shade that suits every skin tone. Per our Stylist, Michelle, “Wisteria evokes an individuality that feels both luxurious and intriguing.” From light pastels to bold saturations, this purple hue will plant its roots in your 2025 closet.

Wisteria will sprout up in all your favorite silhouettes and styles—so how do you wear it? “Make a statement in a head-to-toe look, or add as a pop of color,” says Michelle. Feeling bold? Embrace a head-to-toe monochromatic look incorporating different textures and shades. One combination we love: a silky lavender dress with a structured plum blazer and sleek lilac pumps. If a more subtle approach is more your style, that’s OK, too! Start with your go-to neutrals, and add a pop-of-purple handbag or strappy heel.

women's fall outfits 2023

Autumn’s arrival brings crisp air, the holidays—and most important, a fresh crop of new-season trends. “Fall is the time to step out of your style comfort zone and try more elevated looks,” says Stitch Fix Stylist Alex R. From polished pieces primed for a stylish return to office (remember that place?), to folkloric fashions set for a cozy-chic season ahead, there’s a just-right fall aesthetic for everyone to try this season.

Wondering what sartorial adventures fall 2023 has in store for you? Grab a hot cup of cider and dig into our guide to the season’s top four trends to know—and ask your Stylist for—right now.

fall 2023 work outfits for women

1. Power dressing

If “Working 9-to-5” feels like your theme song, you’ll want to get in on the season’s office-approved trend. Professional styles are climbing the fall fashion ladder, and they’ll have your autumn wardrobe set for success. All-business blazers, tailored trousers & leather loafers are among the staples that’ll level up your closet. (You’ve likely seen the words “quiet luxury” floating around this fall, and these sharp silhouettes are your ticket to mastering the aesthetic.)

What if your day-to-day doesn’t involve a Monday-Friday grind? You can rock the latest workwear any day that ends in “y”, says Stitch Fix Stylist Alex R: “The beauty of these silhouettes is that they mix and match seamlessly with casual pieces in your closet. Try a blazer over a simple tee, or loafers with straight-leg denim.” Into a dressier off-duty vibe? For date night, debut a sleek sheath dress and polished pumps, or top your going-out look with a chic trench (one of our Stylists’ favorite fall jackets for women) for a look that has boss vibes written allll over it.

2023 Fall trend outfits for women cottagecore

2. Cottagecore cool

Imagine spending a crisp fall day in a picturesque woodland cottage, surrounded by stunning foliage. Even if an idyllic nature escape isn’t actually in your future, you can still channel the romanticized vibe with the season’s evolved cottagecore aesthetic. “Fall 2023’s fresh take on the charming trend is rooted in back-to-nature hues and easy, everyday silhouettes,” says Stitch Fix Stylist Alex R. Look out for versatile utility jackets and cargo pants cut in mossy green. Don a swingy, neutral maxi dress clad in nature-inspired prints like microfloral or ivy leaves. Pluck any of these styles out of a forested daydream and take them into your day-to-day by adding versatile suede boots and cozy fall sweaters for women. Your Folklore era’s calling—just let your Stylist know you’re ready for it.

2023 fall trend outfits collegiate chic

3. Collegiate chic

Remember the days when autumn meant the start of another school year? If you’re nostalgic for the smell of fresh notebooks and pencils, you’ll be excited to know that collegiate-chic fashion is topping the style report card of fall 2023. In the lineup of scholastic styles, these silhouettes are first-string: varsity bomber jackets, classic blazers, cable-knit anything, crisp shirting, and polished loafers. While there are plenty of preppy pieces to choose from, Stitch Fix Stylist Alex R. shares her favorite fashion formula: “You can’t go wrong with a cable sweater and a blazer paired with straight-leg denim and loafers.” Often cut in timeless tones like navy, burgundy, forest green and white, these trending styles are easy to mix and match to your heart’s delight.

Another essential to look out for this season is stripes. From bold rugby stripes to contemporary vertical lines, this beloved pattern is a studious staple. If you’re new to print, start small by styling a heritage striped shirt. Go vintage with a collared option tucked into straight-leg jeans and layer with a cabled sweater vest. Pull on Chelsea boots or loafers, and you’re looking at an A+ womens fall outfit

2023 fall trend outfits night out

4. Night-out style

Some say a summer night can’t be beat, but a fall night out is just as fun. From a chic cocktail bar to a country dance floor, don’t let the dropping temperatures cramp your P.M. plans—or your style. Embrace your wild side and have some fun with the season’s of-the-moment fitted silhouettes and edgy fabrics (this is your opportunity to take some style risks!) When it comes to choosing a color palette, you don’t just have to paint the town red—moody, trending tones like jet black and deep indigo will dial up the drama of your night-out ensemble.

For a city-sleek vibe, opt for a silky slip dress cut in a bold print or a head-turning hue. “It’s the ultimate day-to-night staple, says Stitch Fix Stylist Alex R., “just add sneakers and a cardigan for daytime wear”. Step up the cool factor with metallic heels that shine in the moonlight, or block-heeled boots that’ll keep you on the dance floor in comfort. Pair your going-out look with a statement earring, and reach for a structured shoulder bag as you head out the door. Fall nights can be cold, so grab a leather moto jacket to complete your look. Now you’re ready to hit the town.

Oh, maxi dress. Let us count the ways that we love thee. They are classic, low-maintenance, easy to toss on and an instant outfit in seconds. They are magic in an easy-to-wear bottle, and we have your complete guide to maxi dresses right here, right now.

How about we kick things off with a quick history lesson on the much-loved maxi dress? Dresses have evolved in many ways over the years. The oldest woven garment ever found was a 5,000 year old dress discovered in an Egyptian tomb. Known as the Takhan dress, it is pleated with beautiful stitching and hits a little past the knee. Since then, many different dress designs have emerged for every occasion and season. At last count, there are over 40 different types of dress selections. From slip, to midi, to cocktail, there are various silhouettes to choose from, but arguably none of them are as versatile, comfortable or wearable as the maxi dress.

Now that we have had our history lesson, let’s find out more about the maxi dress and its many remarkable designs.

What is a maxi dress?

What exactly is a maxi dress, you ask? A taller dress silhouette, longer in length, with the hem typically falling on the top of your feet. While there are many variations of this style of dress, traditionally they are form-fitting on top and cut loosely over the rest of the body, making it a garment that is complementary to many different body types. They are known to have a multi-faceted design easy to dress up or down.

While it isn’t exactly clear when the first maxi dress was created, their popularity erupted in 1968. Fashion designer Oscar de la Renta debuted his innovative design at the Elizabeth Arden Fashion Show, followed by a widely read article that featured the same dress in the New York Times. Both ignited the popularity of the maxi dress and the love for the design continues to this day. Fueled by its demand, a variety of maxi dress modifications emerged on the scene.

What are the different types of maxi dresses?

We have rounded up the top maxi designs for you. From trendy to classic, there are so many amazing designs to choose from. Check out the highlighted options to find the best maxi dress (or dresses) for you.

Style Alert: Off-the-shoulder

The off-the-shoulder style is strapless, and as the name implies—the neckline falls right over the shoulders. It is often accompanied by an empire waistline positioned just under the bust. Pair your off-the-shoulder dress with a gorgeous necklace or your favorite statement earrings for a pop of wow to finish your maxi dress look.

Style Alert: T-Shirt

There is nothing like the comfort of your favorite tried-and-true T-shirt, unless it’s a T-shirt maxi dress. Think of it as the ultimate long, tall tee. From fitted to tank, to a free-flowing traditional short sleeved tee, the T-shirt maxi dress is as comfortable as it is stylish. It’s the perfect way to achieve the trendy athleisure attire that is on point this season. Slip on your favorite pair of sneakers, and you are set with a fresh look for whatever the day brings.

Style Alert: Spaghetti Strap

Next up, is the spaghetti strap maxi dress. This dress still shows off your shoulders but is secured by thin straps that are often adjustable for maximum comfort. The stability of the straps allows this maxi dress to have a variety of necklines. From v-neck to cowl, the spaghetti strap dress comes in many different variations and is the star of warm summer days.

Style Alert: Hi-Lo

The hi-lo maxi dress takes a walk on the wild side with a unique hemline with a shorter length in the front and a longer length in the back. It’s a fun and flirty option and shows off your favorite pair of shoes at the same time. Fun fact: the hi-lo hem is also known as an asymmetrical, waterfall or mullet hem.

Style Alert: Tiered

Tiered maxi dresses are a series of layers of fabric that are sewn together in a waterfall fashion. These lovely dresses are often constructed in a smock-style, or loose-fitting shape. They are in the nap dress family as featured as one of this year’s women’s spring fashion trends. The tiered design is not only a popular style, but also a piece that you will find front and center in cottagecore, a fashion trend that is taking TikTok by storm.

Style Alert: Statement Sleeve

Whether long, short, statement or capped, maxi dresses with sleeves are just as popular as those without. This year’s women’s summer trends feature statement sleeves like balloon, ruffle and flutter and add just the right touch to maxi styles. These unique details add a layer of interest to complete your look and set it apart from the rest.

Stylist tip: Add simple, neutral shoes to your statement-sleeve dresses to give balance to your overall look.

How to style a maxi dress?

When people think of maxi dresses, most often summer is the first season that comes to mind, but these dresses can be styled in numerous ways making them appropriate for many occasions and seasons. Check out these fun and easy ways to style a maxi dress.

Wear to Work

Layering a blazer over your maxi dress instantly elevates your look to professional levels. Add a classic pump or flat, a long statement necklace and pull the look together with a belt. If your dress is printed, find a solid blazer in a vibrant color to pair with the patterned frock. Rocking a solid maxi dress? Add a textured or printed blazer for interest. Will an oversized blazer work? Absolutely! Pairing an oversized blazer with a waist-free dress with a chunky shoe creates an edgy outfit that’s sure to turn heads. Finish the look with a layered necklace for a polished workday ensemble.

Top it Off

Adding a long-sleeved shirt under your maxi dress completely changes the look and makes it appropriate for cooler seasons. In warmer months, increase the versatility of your dresses by adding a light button-up shirt over your outfit. Tie the front of the top in a knot for a cropped look to give the illusion of a high-waisted maxi-skirt with shirt combo. The best way to achieve a sporty look is by simply swapping out the button-up for your favorite graphic tee. Knot the front of the shirt, add sneakers and you are set with another fresh look for the summer.

Layer it Up

What are the best layers to wear with a maxi dress? Throw on a moto, cargo or jean jacket over your dresses to add warmth, texture and dimension to your look. Too hot for a jacket? Layering on a sheer kimono or light vest will achieve the same effect when temperatures rise. Include a crossbody or belt bag with this look for a stylish day of exploring in your maxi dress.

Belt it Out

Use a belt to give your maxi dress a whole new shape and style. Add a pop-of-color to a solid maxi dress and a metallic belt to a printed maxi dress for an instantly transformed outfit. Can’t find the right belt in your closet? Get out your long silky scarves and tie one around your waist to achieve the same look with a boho feel.

What shoes to wear with a maxi dress?

You can’t complete an outfit without shoes. When it comes to what shoes to wear with a maxi dress, anything goes. These dresses are incredibly versatile and are easy to wear with anything from a colorful pair of wedges, to a solid combat boot. The best method of picking a shoe is to gather an array of shoes that complement the activities in your day and have a little try-on sesh.

Shoes that you will see everywhere this summer are fancy flat sandals, chunky clogs, pretty platforms and statement sneakers. Pair these trends with a flowing maxi for an instantly polished look for the season. Create an athleisure look with your favorite pair of sneakers. Adding a printed block heel to a solid maxi creates an even longer, taller silhouette to slay the whole day. There are no rules when it comes to what shoes to wear with maxi dresses.

How do I tie a maxi dress?

Now that you know how to style your maxi dresses, there is one more way to completely transform the look—tie them up. Say what now? Tie a maxi dress? Yes. Simply gather the hem on one of the sides of your dress and knot it for an asymmetrical look. Make the knot as tall or short as you please by creating different lengths and silhouettes. You can also gather and knot the fabric right in the middle of the dress to create a faux midi effect with a waterfall hem. This knotting technique is ideal for trips where you want to pack light because you can create so many different looks with one single maxi dress.

Another option is the convertible maxi dress that takes the tie to new levels. The extra long straps allow you to tie in many different ways to achieve a plethora of looks. From one-shoulder to a criss-cross back, the convertible style is a one-stop-shop for maxi dress looks.

Does all this inspiration have you seeing maxi dresses in your future? Take your style quiz, schedule a Fix and ask your stylist for a maxi dress to expand your wardrobe options. Remember, shipping and returns are always free.

What’s one of the best things about dropping temps and shorter days? Getting to reunite boots with jeans—the ultimate dynamic duo. From different styles of boots to countless cuts of jeans, there are enough combinations to last for months. But let’s slow down for a second. You might be wondering how to wear boots with jeans. Good news, you’ve come to the right place. Keep scrolling to discover our favorite ways to wear boots with jeans.

How to Wear Ankle Boots with Jeans

The answer to how to wear ankle boots with jeans is easy: any and every way your heart desires. Ankle boots are that three-season closet staple that never let you down. Whether walking through freshly fallen leaves or jumping over puddles of melting snow, ankle boots are sweet to your feet. The best part about these bad boys? You can wear them with any style of jeans. All it takes is finding the right fit and some stylish touches. Here are our top tips on wearing ankle boots with jeans.

Ankle Boots with Straight-Leg Jeans

Straight-leg jeans are a favorite style for fall 2021 women’s fashion trends, so it’s no surprise they’re a shoe-in to wear with ankle boots. The key to hacking how to wear ankle boots with straight-leg jeans is finding the right inseam. You might have guessed it, but ankle boots stop at, well, your ankles. So, find a pair of straight-leg denim that complement this height instead of competing with it. Search for jeans that stop an inch or two above the top of your boots. This will keep all eyes on your fabulous footwear.

Since you’re opting for a cropped-length jean, be adventurous with your ankle boot choices. While you can never go wrong with a classic leather pair, why not take a walk on the wild side? Think a chic zebra print pair or a vegan leather style in an enticing emerald shade. If you do choose to go with a statement shoe, keep your jean wash classic.

Stylist Tip: If having a gap between your straight-leg jeans and your ankle boots leaves your shins feeling chilly, add a pair of crew or ankle socks. Pick out a neutral shade like chestnut or heathered grey to easily match your ensemble. Or, if you’re a footwear fashionista, dare to wear a pop of color like merlot or mustard.

Ankle Boots with Skinny Jeans

If the ultra-trendy straight-leg fit isn’t your speed, don’t worry, skinny jeans are still cool in the boot world. When pondering how to wear ankle boots with skinny jeans, you might hit a dilemma. The age-old question: to tuck or not to tuck your jeans. Our vote? Skip the tuck for a trendy take on boots and skinny jeans. Similar to wearing your ankle boots with straight-leg jeans, we recommend looking for ankle length or cropped skinnies.

If you feel your skinny jeans bunching up when you pair them with ankle boots, try a cuff. Fold the hem of your pants outwards once or twice for a polished look with some lived-in panache. When taking your ankle boots and skinnies to a professional setting, cuff your pants inwards to avoid showing any seams. Next up is our take on how to style ankle boots with skinny jean’s alter ego: wide-leg jeans.

Ankle Boots with Wide-Leg Jeans

When feeling stumped on how to wear ankle boots, don’t be afraid to stretch your comfort zone. Wide-leg jeans are having a style renaissance, and you can bet your boots we love partnering them with ankle booties. You may be thinking, wait, won’t wide-leg jeans cover my ankle boots? Enter the kick-flare wide-leg pant. If this term hasn’t popped up in your fashion vocabulary, here’s a quick explainer. Kick-flare pants are part of the wide-leg pant trend with a hem that ends somewhere between your ankle and knee. These shin-length styles will not only show off your shoes, but also add some retro 70s fashion vibes to your look.

To fully embrace this throwback trend, go for an acid-wash pair of kick-flares and brown suede ankle boots. Or, amp up the boho style details with embroidered denim and platform ankle boots. Add a cropped sweater with puffy sleeves, and you’re ready to take on chilly days in any decade. Voilá, you’ve aced ankle boots 101. Now let’s up the ankle boot ante with combat boots.

How to Wear Combat Boots with Jeans

Good news, combat boot lovers. You don’t have to leave your heavy metal days behind. Combat boots are at the height of fashion and here to stay. These industrial-inspired shoes are not only great for keeping your feet protected through weather or a mosh pit. They also come in a variety of styles. From classic black leather to ribbed-knit uppers or printed vinyl, there’s a pair just waiting for you to lace up.

If you’re curious about how to wear combat boots with jeans, here’s a quick go-to. For an edgy look, experiment with scissor-hem skinnies in dark indigo or black partnered with combat boots. Serve a little mix-and-match magic by pairing your boots with a moto jacket. On the other hand, if you like more color in your outfits, contrast your boots with straight-cut pastel jeans and a romantic ruffled top. After all, what’s more punk-rock than wearing whatever you want?

How to Wear Chelsea Boots with Jeans

Hear that? It’s London Calling to tell you how to wear boots with jeans. Chelsea boots to be exact. What is a Chelsea boot, you ask? They are an English-originating style of ankle boots with a characteristic knit panel on the sides. For a quick history lesson, these boots go back as far as the Victorian era. However, they gained their name and popularity from the trendy and well-off Chelsea neighborhood in London during the 50s and 60s. In fact, when you think of Chelsea boots, you might think of fashion icons like Jean Shrimpton and The Rolling Stones wearing them. In the mood to feel mod? Grab a pair of jeans and let’s get to styling those quintessential Chelsea boots.

Styling Chelsea Boots with Jeans: Vintage Vibes

When thinking about how to style Chelsea boots with jeans, you can start with some of the same ankle boot tips. A cropped jean flatters Chelsea boots since they showcase the signature knit panel detail. Straight, skinny and kick-flare silhouettes look right at home with this boot. For a moody, vintage vibe, look for a lug sole pair. Then, wear them with ripped jeans and your go-to band tee. Now you’re ready to rock, London style.

Polished and Preppy with Chelsea Boots and Jeans

On the other hand, Chelsea boots also complement a preppy aesthetic. To nail this nobby look, go with true-blue jeans in a slim or skinny fit. If your jeans are long enough, try tucking them into your boots. The knit panel of the Chelsea boots will keep your jeans in place and match the tailored silhouette. Punch up this posh ensemble with a coordinating striped sweater and belt. Or, layer up in a button-down and rugged cargo jacket on top. And just like that, you’re a pro of all things Chelsea boots and denim.

Stylist Tip: Did you know that Chelsea boots come in more materials than just faux and authentic leather? If you’re looking for an ankle-height rain shoe, a rubber Chelsea boot is just your speed. Channel your inner Morton’s salt girl with a color-coordinating rain jacket and hat to keep the storm clouds at bay. For heavier rainfall or snow days, swap for a pair of duck boots.

How to Wear Duck Boots with Jeans

Do cold seasons mean rain, sleet or snow for you? If so, you might be wondering how to wear duck boots with jeans. Duck boots are durable, weather resistant boots usually made with a leather upper and rubber lower. The rubber point is perfect for trekking mountain terrain or keeping your balance on black ice in the city. Your feet will stay dry and your outfit will have a rugged, outdoorsy twist. Fashionable and functional? We call that a win-win.

Straight-Leg Jeans and Duck Boots

The same way straight-fit jeans were the perfect answer for how to wear boots with jeans, so too, with duck boots. In fact, duck boots and straight-leg jeans are perfect for capturing the wintry cabincore trend. While some cabincore styles focus on knit bottoms, jeans are just as essential, especially when braving the elements outdoors. Slip on a pair of straight-leg jeans and grab your fuzziest socks to wear under your boots. Prepare for a Thoreau-inspired nature walk by bundling up with a thermal base layer and a teddy bear jacket on top. Trap in all your body heat with a marled knit beanie and scarf and take in the wonders of the season.

Skinny Jeans and Duck Boots

Calling all skinny denim heads—it’s time to learn how to wear duck boots with skinny jeans. Since duck boots are meant to keep out any weather, you can definitely get away with tucking skinny jeans into your boots. In fact, you can even tuck your jeans into your cuddly socks. However, we know duck boots are too cute to only wear for inclement weather. Take them with your skinny jeans anytime you’ll be outdoors. Wondering what to wear apple picking? Try a pair of authentic wash skinnies with these boots and get to picking in a plaid henley. But your ankles can’t get all the attention. It’s time to figure out what to do with tall boots and jeans.

How To Wear Tall Boots with Jeans

We’ve covered some stylish ideas about how to wear boots with jeans, but tall boots sometimes play by a different set of rules. Tall boots almost always go with jeans tucked into them. You can also wear bootcut or wide-leg pants over them. But to flaunt your mile-high footwear friends, it’s best to tuck in a pair of skinnies. Tall boots easily bring chic-style into the winter season. Get ready for a date night by pulling on a black leather pair over your go-to skinny jeans. Partner it with a bodysuit with playful details like a one-shoulder cut-out or bell sleeves. All that’s missing is a bit of sparkle. Whether you reach for a pendant necklace or teardrop earrings, you’ll be dripping in elegant attitude if you wear pearls.

Stylist Tip: Update your tall boot game with a pair of over-the-knee boots. This longer length gives you instant high-fashion style points without having to overthink your outfit.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to sleep late, embrace your bedhead and toss on an unkempt outfit, all in the name of fashion? We have grunge style to thank for that because it’s making a stylishly disheveled comeback. In fact, 90s nostalgia and grunge go hand-in-hand and are a huge part of women’s fall 2022 trends. With that said, we’re having flashbacks of young Winona Ryder in just-rolled-out-of-bed outfits. Or, who could forget Monica Geller’s iconic grunge looks on “Friends?” Her effortlessly cool outfits were comically in contrast to her rather obsessive-compulsive nature and hankering for cleanliness. That just goes to show that anyone can pull off grunge fashion. Are you curious to learn more about this low-key aesthetic? If so, crank up the angsty tunes and keep reading.

What is Grunge Style?

What is grunge style, you ask? Grunge style is all about not making a fashion statement. Yes, you read that right. It’s less about rebellion and more about passively rejecting current fashion trends. 90s grunge style embraces dressing down, which is a direct contrast to the flashy attire that was all the rage in the decade prior. While dark clothes are a popular choice among grunge goers, washed-out shades of any color fit right in. From its core, grunge outfits are wholly androgynous so you can easily borrow items from a sibling or guy friend. In fact, de-emphasizing your shape is a mainstay of this trend with its loose fits and unstructured silhouettes. Ultimately, grunge style is über inclusive and welcoming of anyone and everyone who wants to give it a try.

Style Tip: If you’re interested in building a more sustainable wardrobe, grunge style will lend well to your mission. As a matter of fact, many of the items that fall under this lived-in aesthetic are thrift-worthy and affordable. Buying secondhand is truer to the trend’s roots and, in turn, is kinder to your wallet and the planet. That’s a win-win in our book.

The Origin and Icons of Grunge Style

Did you know that the lead singer of Nirvana was a major grunge style icon? In fact, many people credit Kurt Cobain as the trailblazer of the grunge movement and the trend-bending fashion that it inspired. Alternative rock bands like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden were a part of the 1990s music scene where it all began. What started as a style of music quickly evolved into a visual fashion aesthetic. Grunge artists took a different approach to the punk attire of shirts without sleeves, chain accents and body modifications. Instead, they reached for simple styles that a struggling artist could afford. Unexpectedly, Cobain’s mundane outfits took the fashion world by storm and entered the mainstream.

American fashion designer, Marc Jacobs, brought grunge to the runway with flannel shirts and black combat-style boots. In the 2010s, designers coined the term boho-chic, and infused it with grunge-inspired back-to-school looks. Just as every trend comes and goes, we’re seeing a resurgence of these laid-back outfits once again. Not only are women’s grunge styles easy to achieve, but they’re also comfy to wear. All in all, we’re here for it.

Core Grunge Style Elements

While classic grunge style is the basis of the subculture, different versions of the aesthetic exist.  We’ll dive into those modern adaptations a bit later. For now, let’s focus on the building blocks that bring grunge fashion to life. These core elements are items that likely live in your (or your bestie’s) closet already. On the flip side, you may need to add a few new pieces to your grunge repertoire for full effect. Put the Alice in Chains record on pause and listen up: You won’t want to miss our top clothing picks for building a wardrobe that is refreshingly ordinary.

Oversized Plaid Shirts and Graphic Tees

Loose plaid shirts and graphic T-shirts—especially band tees—are the epitome of peak grunge style. If you have a few of each, you’re well on your way to creating those beloved casual outfits. While they’re a dynamic duo, you can also wear them separately. Perfecting a grunge look involves strategic layering. With that in mind, it doesn’t mean that each layer needs to be baggy. An oversized button-up will look great over a fitted tank top if you’re looking to maintain a balance of proportions.

Style Tip: Well-worn shirts are the name of the grunge game. Got a new tee that you’re wanting to look and feel more vintage? Simply wash it with bleach (this works best with cotton) to fade the color. To wear down the graphics, use sandpaper to carefully scuff up the areas you’d like to crack and peel. It may take a few tries or multiple washes, but your persistence will pay off.

Baggy and Distressed Denim

Sorry skinny jeans, you’re sitting this one out. Instead, we’re opting for mom jeans, skater styles and the wide-leg variety for our grunge getups. Full-length jeans are the traditional way to wear them, but feel free to keep it modern with a cropped pair. If you’re a fan of distressing, make sure any holes or fraying are from genuine wear and tear. Think about the state they’d be in after touring the world as grunge rockstars. If any rips become too large, simply patch them up for a customized, one-of-a-kind look. Faded black, almost grey, washes along with acid- and stone-wash denim are prime choices. This includes jean jackets as well. In fact, grunge style embraces the double denim Canadian tuxedo, so the more, the merrier.

Chunky Boots and Skater Shoes

To step into your best grunge form, you’re going to need the right shoes. If you’re only investing in one pair, let it be a clunky combat boot. They add a masculine feel to any outfit and go with just about anything, even skirts and dresses. Choose a suede or leather finish in a neutral shade like brown, tan or black for utmost versatility. Whether you opt for a lace-up, zip-up or pull-on style, you really can’t go wrong. In addition, chunky boots fit well under loose-fitting jeans for ease of wear. Now you can stomp the day away without a care in the world.

Not really a boot-loving gal? For a contemporary take on grunge style, swap the boots for a pair of platform mary janes or loafers. As an added bonus, you can borrow from your dark academia closet to pull this one off. Or, if you want an ultra-casual feel, reach for those trusty high-top skater shoes to seal the deal.

90s Grunge Fashion

Grunge style is inherently 90s, but for a refreshing take, pull from other 90s fashion trends to spice up your life. For example, opt for a slip dress or skirt as an unexpected swap for straight-leg jeans. A rich burgundy tone will look stellar coupled with a charcoal grey vintage baby tee. Lastly, top off your look with classic combat boots for a delightful balance of feminine and masculine details. Don’t forget the pop of plaid seen in many 90s grunge fashion looks. Simply tie a worn-out flannel around your waist for effortless layering. From here, accessorize with a thin velvet choker or swipe on a dark brown lipstick for an added throwback effect. Now you’re ready to fangirl over the Backstreet Boys when their tour stops in a city near you.

Indie Grunge Style

Staying true to the counterculture theme, let’s talk about how to pull off indie grunge style. It’s easy to give your grunge aesthetic outfits a hipster twist by tweaking a few of the basic grunge elements. Instead of an oversized plaid shirt, opt for a fitted one that sits close to the body. Wear it buttoned all the way to the top for a gender-neutral look. Tuck your shirt into your most distressed pair of jeans and layer it with a chunky cardigan. Keep the knitwear coming with a crochet beanie, or style a blanket scarf around your neck. For accessories, add a personal twist to your handbag with pins and patches of your choice. Wear this nonconforming outfit while enjoying craft beer and listening to an obscure band that no one has heard of.

Fairy Grunge Style

You may have never heard of fairy grunge style before, but if you’re a fan of escapist trends, stay tuned. Similar to the cottagecore aesthetic, fairy grunge draws inspiration from nature and romanticizes life among butterflies and moss-covered trees. Fans of this trend infuse fairy folklore and femininity into their personal style with bows, lace and sheer fabric. In addition to the soft and dainty details, there’s a merging of moody elements for a grunge twist. Think dark colors, corsets and fishnet stockings. If you’re a gal who loves the idea of combining contrasting styles, this one is for you.

To pull off a fairy grunge ensemble, start with a flowy maxi dress with lace inlets and dreamy puff sleeves. Contrast your beautiful frock with lace-up combat boots that are perfect for searching for fairy life in the forest. Furthermore, leave your hair loose and a little wild with a couple of small, messy braids. Are you wanting to feel even more connected to Mother Nature? Add a sprinkling of wildflowers to your hairdo and accessorize with a sun or moon necklace.

Edgy Grunge Style

Put the grrr in grunge by taking things to an edgier level. Most people associate grunge with the 90s, but there was a definite crossover from the punk era in the 80s. Evidently, leather was a common overlap between these two aesthetics. Now’s the time to break out your favorite moto jacket and let it shine. For full-on edgy grunge style, seek out a stunning little black dress made of leather or leather-like materials. By all means, dress it up with heels or take the unexpected route with a pair of canvas platform sneakers. To complete the marrying of edgy style and grunge fashion, you’ll need that quintessential plaid print. Reserve your usual flannel for another grunge look and go for something a bit more substantial. Top off your dress with a plaid shacket in a red and black colorway to match a bold crimson lip.
